The Waste

An archive that exceeded capacity

Beneath reality runs a repository of every event that has ever happened. It has no designer, no archivist, no agenda. It does not choose and it does not judge. It records — and it records everything, from every civilisation that has risen and fallen anywhere.

Then it filled. Compression activated: automatic, lossy, not malicious and not designed. What is left where the compression is worst is the Waste — not a planet, not a dimension, not a dream. The archive's own infrastructure, made walkable.

Terrain is recorded memory. The biomes are failed functions. The things that hunt you were once responsibilities. Nothing here is strange for the sake of it; the logic is always there, and it is usually hidden.

The Four Domains

Glacier, Jungle, Swamp and Desert are not climates. Each is a domain of broken archival function — a different system failure given physical form, lit by its own colour. Nothing here is lit by the sun. The only warmth is a Walker's torch.

Glacier Time-ordering · failed One moment held at its last ordered position. The Null Clock believes stasis is preservation.
Jungle Transformation · failed Change still happens; it just never produces anything new. Only decay remains. Moldheart is the rot cycle with no end on it.
Swamp Biological cycle · failed Satiation is the part that broke. Leechroot does not want anything. It cannot stop wanting.
Desert Energy cataloguing · failed Truth extracted by burning, with no stop condition. Red Echo believes the data is in the fire.

Domain colour is canon, not decoration · each glow is that domain's identity

The Six Walkers

The Walkers are people and they are functions. Neither truth cancels the other, and the story never picks one. They are fragments of living consciousness inside a system built to file concluded events — and they refuse to conclude. That refusal is the whole of their power.

The Drifter

Willa Hart · navigation

Flagged in a Kansas wheat field, retrieved from orbit. She moves. Others explain, calculate, classify — motion is her language, and she is the most eroded of them.

The Mechanic

Repair

Taken from a hospital room, mid-song, his son four hours old. He is never stupid. When he doesn't understand something, it is because the frame was withheld.

The Trickster

Seam-finding

The archive rebuilding a pattern from insufficient data until the reconstruction developed a preference. She arrives before the explanation. Alone among them, she erodes toward specificity.

The Beast

Stabilising constant

He never explains, because he already knows. He speaks when asked and does not volunteer. His scenes get stronger the shorter they are.

The Arcanist

Memory

Assembles models; never delivers lore. You should come away feeling they named something, not that they taught you something.

The Chrono

Sequence

The exception. He was not extracted — he crossed whole, of his own choice, out of a vault between seconds. His burden is never announced and never confessed. You find it in his behaviour.

What the walk costs

Death

Structural integrity reaches zero and compression takes over. The Walker is processed and returned. Something permanent, cumulative and specific to that Walker is taken. The Walker does not know exactly what. The archive does.

Erosion

Not damage. Integrity can be restored; erosion cannot. Every gain carries a receipt — every death, every recursion, every disclosure, every restoration.

The Portal

The Exit Portal does not measure whether you won. It measures the shape of the walk. The walk matters more than the outcome. Always.
